The Inside Scoop: Interview with our Community Manager on what it takes to succeed in this role

Since we recently opened up a position for a new Community Manager, we would like to gain insight into what the role entails and what qualities the ideal candidate should have. I sat down for an interview with the current Community Manager of StartDock Herengracht, Yanna.

Yanna has been Community Manager at StartDock for 1,5 years now, and her responsibilities include, among others, creating and organizing events, running the operational co-working and fostering relationships between members. During the interview, she highlighted some essential qualities for anyone who wants to succeed as a Community Manager.

First and foremost, Yanna emphasized the importance of being a social person with a wide range of interests. A Community Manager is approachable, friendly, and always willing to help. They get energy from making connections with a diverse group of people and making everyone feel welcome. "It's essential to create an atmosphere of belonging," she explained. "People come to StartDock not only to work but also to be part of a community."

In addition to being social, a Community Manager must be organized and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. They have excellent communication skills and are comfortable working independently. "It helps to be proactive and always think ahead," Yanna said. "It's crucial to have a clear plan for events and initiatives and ensure everything runs smoothly."

Yanna also highlighted the importance of creativity. It is appreciated when a Community Manager is able to come up with innovative ideas for events and initiatives that will engage and excite Dockers. "You can't just repeat the same events over and over," she said. "You need to be creative and think outside the box to keep things fresh and exciting."

Finally, Yanna emphasized the importance of being passionate about the job. "I genuinely care about the Dockers and the community," she said. "It's not just a job; it's a family. I am invested in the people and their success."
