StartDock Quarterly Impact Update
At StartDock, we believe it's outdated to evaluate a company solely based on the equation "Revenue - Costs = Profit / Loss." That's why StartDock is currently working towards becoming a B Corp, making our impact open and transparent, while using our business as a force for good.

In our quarterly update, we aim to provide an in-depth look at our initiatives. We continue to share our progress towards these goals, including our energy and water consumption, waste reduction, and community outreach efforts. We will use this update to reflect on our accomplishments, challenges, and areas where we can further improve.
By sharing our progress and goals, we hope to inspire others to join us on this journey toward a more sustainable future. Whether you are a Docker, supplier, investor, or an individual who wants to make a difference, we invite you to join us.
Quarterly Recap: Q2 2023
In the second quarter of 2023, we made progress towards our goals. Here's an overview of our achievements:
Volunteering
This quarter, we introduced a new program that allows our colleagues to take two paid days off per year for volunteering outside of StartDock. We've had a team dedicated to contributing their time outside of work for years, mostly during weekends. To encourage their involvement, we now enable them to volunteer during work hours as well.
B Impact Assessment
Since mid-June, we have been assigned a Primary Analyst from B Lab. This means our assessment is currently under review. We are working diligently to provide all the necessary evidence of our steps to B Lab. We hope to receive the green light soon and officially certify as a B Corp.
Sustainability Bingo
During the past quarter, our colleague Fleur conducted research at our Westplein location. The goal of this research was to find ways to encourage Dockers to make conscious choices through a gamified element. In May, we held the Sustainability Bingo, where participants had a chance to win a prize. The bingo was well-received by our Dockers! We hope to expand the test and implement the bingo at other locations soon.
Satisfaction
We have performed our first Happiness Survey of 2023. We are proud to present we have an overall NPS score of 21. We also received an 8.2/10 for hospitality and service. We also got some interesting feedback which we will be focusing on in the upcoming months, you can get more info on this at your community manager. Next to the Happiness Survey we also got the results of our Employee Happiness Survey, in which we received an E-NPS of 81!
Press Me - Little Flush
The most significant water consumption at StartDock comes from toilet flushing. To raise awareness among Dockers about the amount of water used, we encourage them to use the smaller flush button through stickers. This can save 2-3 liters of water per flush! So, even when you're at home, think before you flush!
Other Updates
- We have initiated discussions with our partner Cawa to become carbon-neutral. More details will follow!
- Water-saving devices have been installed on faucets across all StartDock locations (where they were not already present).
- We have a brand new Impact page on our website, where you can read about all our goals.
- We have updated our energy dashboard for Dockers, allowing them to see their energy costs precisely.
- The first spaces at our Herengracht location have been equipped with smart lighting!
- We have reassessed our suppliers, considering sustainability certifications and best practices.
What's Next: Q3 2023
We are halfway through the year, but we still have more steps to take to achieve our goals! In the upcoming quarter, we will focus on the following areas:
- B Corp Certification: As of now, our plan is to obtain our B Corp certification in the next quarter! While we can't guarantee certification, we are hopeful that we will pass the assessment successfully.
- Working towards Carbon Neutrality: As StartDock, we aim to make our offices and workspaces carbon-neutral. Currently, this cannot be achieved solely through the sustainability of our buildings. We are collaborating with one of our Dockers, Cawa, to explore the purchase of carbon credits.
- We will continue installing smart lighting in common areas at all StartDock locations. We recognize that lighting plays a significant role in our energy consumption. By implementing this lighting, Dockers won't have to worry about turning off the lights when they leave the building.
- We will also continue our search for sustainable suppliers. Currently, we are exploring the purchase of sustainable office chairs. In other areas as well, we aim to find suppliers that align with our impact narrative.
We are dedicated to achieving these goals and making a positive impact on the environment and our community. We invite you to join us on this journey. If you have any feedback or input regarding our goals and performance, please don't hesitate to contact us at impact@startdock.nl! We look forward to taking further steps in the next quarter as well!
